Basic Poker Game Rules

To play any game, you really need to know the complete rules before you can begin. If that game is something like poker, that involves money and betting, without the complete knowledge of all the basic rules, you are sure to lose more than you gain. Before we can begin learn that the only goal of poker is to earn a lot of cash, so you can only be benefited if you let the pot grow or else you will end only with a really small amount of cash. It s important that you hold on until the end of the final round, and don’t fold until the final showdown. Hang around a little bit and bluff as much as you can. If luck is with you, you are sure to steal the jackpot.

Alright, let’s begin. First, even before you can settle in for the game, the betting limit has to be decided. Even if it is a kitchen-level game or one of those high-roller stuffs, its better to have a game limit so that the game is played friendly and you don’t end up homeless. The next most important thing is the placing of “ante” or the “token bet”. Each player must place a bet into the pot, even before the cards are dealt, it is sort of like a forced bet, but it is totally acceptable if you ask me, because who knows, the first round might be the only round you can actually win. You can even place a nickel as a token bet, but get ready to be kicked out if you do that at a casino.

Next, the customary card dealing begins. The dealer usually deals the card clockwise, as a tradition, and with the card face down. When everyone has a set of five cards, the dealing is stopped. The rest of the pack is kept at the middle of the table, and the play begins. Well, obviously every player is allowed to look at their own cards, but strictly prohibited from peeking into the other player’s hand. In the first round of play, play begins by placing the first bet, but in occasional cases, the first player doesn’t place a bet, and the chance passes on to the next player and so on. If no one has placed a bet until your turn, you have two choices. You can either “open” or “check’. Open actually means you begin the game by placing the first bet, and “check”, meaning you, too, join that elite group of conservative players. Remember all these are applicable only for the first round. You cannot check after the game has begun.

Then comes the important part, your decision at each round. You have three options whenever there is an ongoing bet. One you can “see”,- which means you imply a bet that matches the ongoing bet, you can “raise”- if you have a really good hand, or, if you just want to be aggressive or bluff, you can choose to “fold”,- which bluntly means you want to quit and escape with whatever you have. This is not highly recommended, because you will lose whatever you have bet so far. At the end of each round, all players are allowed to get rid of their unwanted assets and take some new cards.

You can change up to three cards at this point, but the same rule applies, and you are not allowed to see the discarded cards thrown by the other players. Again, the next round begins, and your allowed to see, check, or fold. This continues on until the final round. At the final round, everyone is required to place their cards after the bet is placed, and whoever has higher hand wins, but there is a cache. If you are the one to place the higher bet and the remaining players fold, you walk away with the pot without even having to show your cards. Now that’s called master bluffing. So, know the rules perfectly and play intelligently.
